Shirley Ann Nofsinger passed away Friday, January 31st at the age of 92 at Colfax Senior Living in Colfax, Wisconsin. She was born September 9, 1932, in Hillsboro, Wisconsin to Bernice (Liska) and Frank Gross.
Shirley graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1950 and went on to attend Lacrosse State Teachers College in Lacrosse, WI. She graduated from there in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science Degree with majors in English and Physical Education. After two years of teaching in West Salem, she returned to Hillsboro and married Joe Nofsinger on June 6, 1956. She taught in the Wonewoc Schools for the next three years. She then left teaching to work on the farm where she and Joe lived for 32 years.
Shirley had many interests including polka dancing, square dancing and traveling. She and Joe belonged to the National Farmers Organization for over 25 years while on the farm. In 1988 they sold the farm and moved to Union Center where she worked at Valley Inn, substitute taught for Elroy and Hillsboro Schools, and was secretary/treasurer for the Village of Union Center. In 1999 they moved to a beautiful small lake near Mauston, WI where they lived the next 16 years. She kept herself busy as treasurer for the Partridge Lake Association and as a board of trustees member for the Juneau County Housing Authority. She moved to Menomonie, Wisconsin in 2016 after Joe passed away to be near her daughters.
Shirley is survived by her three loving children, Nancy Baumgartner of Colfax, WI, Mark (Craig Roberts) Nofsinger of Middleton, WI, and Linda Tuschl of Elk Mound, WI, two grandchildren, Brian Baumgartner of Eau Claire and Nicole Baumgartner of Menomonie, and four great-grandchildren Tegan, Evelynne, Nevaeh, and Ripley. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Warren in infancy, sisters Katherine Wood and Betty Vogel, 2 son’s-in-law, Jon Miller and David Tuschl, and brothers-in-law James Vogel and Richard Wood.
A Celebration of Shirley’s life will take place on Friday, February 28, 2025, from 1 to 4 PM at the Grapevine Senior Center, 121 S. Main Street, Colfax, WI 54730.
